Celebrate the Leap Year in Style – Spend Your Extra Day in San Diego

Leap Year

Leap year only comes every four years, keeping the modern Gregorian calendar in alignment with the Earth’s revolutions around the Sun. If you’re a leap year baby, February 29th, 2016 is the big day when you can finally celebrate your birthday. For everybody else, it’s a perfect excuse for another day of fun in San Diego. Here are a few ways to take a break from the grind and celebrate an unforgettable leap year.

Rock out at a Concert

For heartfelt crooning and powerful, folksy ballads that evoke youthful nostalgia, head to Balboa Theatre on February 29th to see a performance of Vance Joy, the Australian singer-songwriter known for his single “Fire and the Flood” on his 2014 debut album, “Dream Your Life Away.”

Go to a Museum

February is Macy’s Museum Month 2016, which offers 50% off admission to participating museums from February 1—29th. The special pass is available at San Diego, Temecula, and Imperial Valley Macy’s locations. With an extra day in the month, get ready to leap into the year at one of San Diego’s cherished museums, including the Birch Aquarium at Scripps and the Maritime Museum of San Diego, among others.

Ride the Giant Dipper at Belmont Park

Built in 1925, the iconic wooden roller coaster is a favorite activity for both locals and tourists. If you think you can handle the scary dips and turns, head to Mission Beach and the beloved oceanfront amusement park for a day full of old-fashioned carnival fun with bumper cars, the Tilta-Whirl, and mini golf for the less adventurous. Also known as the Mission Beach Roller Coaster, the Giant Dipper is one of the last remaining roller coasters on the West Coast designed by notable architects Frederick Church and Frank Prior.

Go Apple Picking in Julian

After a blissful day of apple picking in the historic town of Julian, make your leap year extra sweet and have a slice of Dutch apple pie at the Julian Pie Company, a local institution known for their delicacies of the apple variety. A short drive from San Diego, Julian is worth the trip, especially for the beautiful mountain vistas and hard cider tasting.

Ride in a Hot Air Balloon

Are you ready to go up, up, and away? For an exciting experience worthy of your bucket list, make your leap year unforgettable with a ride in a hot air balloon. As San Diego gets more and more built up, the launch and landing sites are disappearing fast, so take your extra day in February and make the trip to Panorama Balloon Tours and Sky’s the Limit in Carlsbad for a once in a lifetime thrill. The tour companies recommend the popular coastal Del Mar Sunset flight, an awe-inspiring ride filled with spectacular views of Southern California.

San Diego offers a variety of exciting activities to help you make the most of your bonus day in Southern California.
