San Diego boasts amazing Independence Day celebrations that will light up the sky along the sandy shores of the city. Everywhere you turn, there’s a spectacular celebration– from relaxing get-togethers to energetic shows. It’s the perfect place to enjoy the 4th of July with friends and family.
Annual Big Bay Boom July 4th Fireworks Show
Each year at multiple locations, San Diego Bay puts on one of the largest firework displays in the country. From four strategically placed locations around San Diego Bay, fireworks illuminate the night sky.
Sea to Shining Sea 4th of July Firework Show

Make a full day of celebrating along the Mission Beach boardwalk. You can spend the day swimming in the ocean, while having a picnic lunch and building sand castles. Then, as the sun sets, gather to watch the firework show launched from SeaWorld or from Fiesta Island.
Old Town 4th of July
Head to Old Town State Park to enjoy a parade, crafts, and various activities to celebrate an old fashioned celebration with the entire family. Although there are no fireworks, it’s the perfect way to spend the day.
Hornblower Dinner Cruise
Hornblower is a fireworks dinner cruise celebration that consists of a three hour cruise on a grand yacht. The evening is complete with dinner, cocktails, live music, and dancing. Then, gather to watch the fireworks from the Big Bay Boom Fireworks Show.
San Diego County Fair
Enjoy a full day of fun at the San Diego County Fair. In addition to patriotic-themed activities, there’s great food, live music, entertainment, and carnival rides. Hundreds gather each year to join in the celebration and to watch the firework show later in the evening.
Seaport Village is not only one of San Diego’s top local attractions, but a hotspot for Independence Day celebrations. Have dinner at a waterfront restaurant, then grab a blanket to enjoy the view of the Big Bay Boom Fireworks Show.
San Diego’s Independence Day celebrations are so large, all you need to do is pick a spot on the beach or a pier to see one of the many firework shows put on throughout the city. Due to the popularity of the celebrations throughout the city, along with an influx of residents from inland areas, we recommend leaving your car at your home or vacation rental, and enjoying the day on foot or by bicycle. If you’re looking to travel further, San Diego offers a plethora of options for taking public transportation, a taxi, or rideshare service. Parking is limited and often expensive. Remember, always be safe, and never drive a vehicle or bicycle after imbibing alcohol.
No matter where you are this 4th of July, remember to relax and have a great time!
